The story
The fortunate land
Two thousand years ago, the most prized scent in the world came from a strip of dry hills at the southern tip of Arabia, in what is now Oman and Yemen. Frankincense is the resin of the Boswellia tree. Harvesters nick the bark, the tree weeps a milky sap, and over a few weeks it hardens into pale, glassy tears that are scraped off and sorted by hand.
Burned, those tears give a clean, bright, resinous smoke, and the ancient world paid fortunes for it. The trade made the region so rich that Greek and Roman writers gave it a name: Arabia Eudaimon in Greek, Arabia Felix in Latin. Arabia the Fortunate.
The incense road
From the groves, the resin went north by camel. Caravans followed the Incense Route up the western side of the Arabian peninsula for weeks on end, through oasis towns and desert cities such as Petra, to Mediterranean ports like Gaza. Every kingdom along the way took its cut, and the price climbed with every stop.
Rome, the city of seven hills
At the end of the road was Rome, and Rome's appetite was enormous. Frankincense smoked on temple altars, in family shrines and at funerals. Pliny the Elder grumbled that the empire was spending at least a hundred million sesterces a year on luxuries from the East. The story goes that when Nero's wife Poppaea died, he burned more frankincense at her funeral than Arabia could produce in a year.
Fortune favours the bold
Pliny knew the trade well. In his Natural History he catalogued the riches of Arabia and explained how the land had come by its fortunate name. In AD 79, when Vesuvius erupted across the Bay of Naples from Misenum, where he commanded the Roman fleet, he sailed towards the danger. When his helmsman urged him to turn back, Pliny, as his nephew later wrote, answered that fortune favours the bold. He didn't survive the eruption, but the phrase did.
Fortune favours the bold.
Why seven?
Rome had its seven hills, and seven has kept company with incense for a very long time. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, written down more than 3,000 years ago, the survivor of the great flood gives thanks by burning reeds, cedar and myrtle beneath two sets of seven offering vessels, and the gods gather at the sweet smell.
We make incense rather than history, but we liked the idea of a little Roman fortune in every box. So until 6 January 2027, one in every seven orders is on us.

- How orders are picked. Eligible orders are taken in the order they were placed and grouped into consecutive runs of seven. Each Monday (or the next working day if Monday is a bank holiday), one order is picked at random from each run completed by 23:59 on the preceding Sunday, using the RANDOM.ORG Third-Party Draw Service. If fewer than seven eligible orders are left after the last complete run, one of them will also be picked at random. The final draw will take place by Monday 11 January 2027. At least one in every seven eligible orders will therefore be refunded.
